The story Umngani’s Beads follows a boy from rural Natal who moves with his family to an informal settlement outside Durban. As the new boy at school, he becomes a victim of bullying and rejection-a common challenge in many classrooms.
Umngani’s story encourages children to be more accepting of others who may be different from themselves.
The individually packed beading kits, used to create the Buddy Bracelet, connect to the story’s theme. Children make a simple ethnic bracelet using glass beads and a large plastic bead, all of which are easy to thread onto elastic. This activity helps develop elementary counting skills, hand-eye coordination, and a fundamental understanding of symmetry.
Additionally, the Zulu meanings of the bead colours are explained, adding a cultural learning element to the experience.

Normal teacher involvement is required for this age group.
